Adam on working at ABflexkracht

Adam, from Szczecin, Poland, works as a crop specialist at a young plant nursery through ABflexkracht. Like many of his compatriots, Adam couldn’t find work in Poland and decided to try his luck in the Netherlands. His plan was to work there for a few years. Eleven years have passed since then.

In his hometown, Szczecin (PL), there has been a recruitment agency for as long as he can remember; the place to go if you want to work in the Netherlands. “That’s how I ended up in Holland,” Adam laughs. He started with AB North Brabant and worked in construction. After that, he found a job as a goat milker. “I milked five thousand bleating goats, that was really hard work.”

Broader skill set

These days Adam rotates between companies in greenhouse horticulture. Right now, he’s at a young plant nursery in Rijsenhout. With a hose in his hands he explains, “I handle irrigation and take measures to protect the plants against disease, pests, and weeds.” The Netherlands is strict about plant-protection products: you can only apply them with a recognised pesticide application licence. “ABflexkracht enabled me to take the course. I passed the exam and earned my licence. That opportunity helped me grow. My work has more depth now, and I can contribute in more places.”

Choosing ABflexkracht, on purpose

“I’m happy with the arrangement,” he says. “I’m kept well informed, and ABflexkracht arranges transport and accommodation. I spend a few months in the Netherlands, then return to Poland; I’ve done that for years. At home I enjoy time with family and friends I miss while I’m here. Sometimes I even pick up work in Poland for a few months.” Whether he’ll settle permanently in Poland or build a life in the Netherlands? “I haven’t decided yet.”

Working as a translator

“I studied Dutch in Poland and I speak it reasonably well,” Adam says. Although working in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch is possible, I’d like to deepen my language skills further; do a follow-up course. Maybe that way I can make my dream come true and work as a translator. That could be in Poland or in the Netherlands.”

Day trips in the Netherlands

“I’ve grown fond of the Netherlands, especially the cities.” At weekends Adam often goes on day trips. “I walk and explore the historic centres. I think Breda is especially beautiful and cosy. The longer you’re in the Netherlands, the harder it is to make a decision. But,” he laughs, “I haven’t given up hope that one day I’ll settle in Poland for good.”
