Groundworker (Civil Construction) in the Netherlands

As a Groundworker, you work outdoors on diverse civil engineering, road, and water infrastructure projects. You ensure the ground is perfectly prepared for cables, pipelines, roads, and foundations.

Your daily tasks include digging, leveling soil, installing retaining structures, and assisting machine operators during excavation work. You also help with the installation and repair of sewer systems. Thanks to your efforts, every project is built on a strong foundation.

→ Most projects operate during day shifts, usually from 07:00 to 16:00. Occasionally, you may start early (e.g., 06:00), allowing you to finish earlier in the day. For large-scale infrastructure projects (like highway maintenance), night or weekend shifts may occur. These are always compensated with an attractive shift allowance.

The civil engineering, road and water infrastructure sector offers many opportunities for career growth. You begin as an assistant groundworker and develop into an all round specialist as you gain experience. You may specialise in drainage, cables and pipelines, or learn to work with excavators and surveying equipment. With the right skills and motivation, you can also advance to a leadership position, such as a working foreman or project supervisor.

You don’t need a specific diploma to start. Your motivation is what matters most. We are looking for someone who:

• Skills with tools: You have experience with or an interest in working with machines and tools;
• Practical skills: You enjoy working with your hands on a construction site;
• Safety first: You follow safety guidelines and take care of your own safety and that of your colleagues;;
• Physically fit: Groundwork can be physically demanding, as you spend most of the day on your feet and regularly lift materials, using the right equipment when needed;
• Flexible attitude: You are flexible when it comes to working hours and have no problem with shift work or changing schedules.

It is a big plus if you have:

• A relevant vocational qualification in civil engineering or infrastructure (equivalent to Dutch mbo level 2);
• Experience in groundworks, paving, or construction;
• A VCA certificate (Safety Checklist Contractors);
• A valid driving licence (Cat B) and your own transport.
