Your workday as a metalworker in the Netherlands
As a metalworker, every day brings a new challenge. You create and work on metal parts and structures that are used, for example, in cars, machines, bridges, or ships. You work with a wide range of tools and machines, like grinders, welding equipment, drills, saws, press brakes, and computer-controlled CNC milling machines.
Every project starts with a close look at the technical drawing or blueprint to see exactly how the finished product should look. After that, the hands-on work begins: grinding, welding, bending, drilling, or cutting the metal to meet every specification with millimeter accuracy.
You often collaborate with other specialists, such as welders, machinists, and mechanics. Together, you coordinate with the foreman on the schedule and division of tasks to ensure that everyone can work safely. When a part is finished, you carefully inspect its quality before sending it to the customer.
→ Working hours are usually shift-based, as Dutch metal companies often use a two or three-shift system. In practice, this means working early shifts one week and late shifts the next. Of course, you receive a shift differential (allowance) in addition to your salary for this flexibility.
Your career path: growing as a metalworker in the Netherlands
Metalworking offers plenty of opportunities to grow. You can start as a junior metalworker or welder and develop into a well-rounded professional who masters all techniques. You might choose to specialize in precision work on CNC machines, or become a welding expert with certifications in MIG, MAG, and TIG welding. You could also advance into a coordinating role, such as lead operator in the workshop or production coordinator.
No matter which direction you want to take, we support you with the right training and coaching to help you move forward. Your ambition always comes first.
Why this job in the Netherlands is a great fit for you
You do not need a higher education degree to start working as a metalworker. Your motivation and eagerness to learn matter most! Here is what we like to see:
- Technical insight and precision: You can interpret technical drawings and you complete your work with exact millimetre accuracy;
- Practical skills: You like working with your hands and have experience or interest in operating machines and tools such as sawing, drilling and welding equipment;
- Safety first: You follow safety guidelines and take care of your own safety and that of your colleagues;
- Physically fit: Metalwork can be physically demanding, as you spend most of the day on your feet and regularly lift materials, using the right equipment when needed;
- Flexible attitude: You are flexible when it comes to working hours and have no problem with shift work or changing schedules.
- Basic Dutch or English: You can follow basic instructions and communicate clearly with colleagues about the work.
What gives you an edge:
- A technical education, such as secondary vocational training in Metalwork, Mechanical Engineering or Welding;
- Welding certificates, for example MIG/MAG or TIG level 1 or 2;
- Experience as a metalworker, welder, fabricator or in a similar role within the metal industry;
- A valid VCA certificate (for safe working) or other relevant safety qualifications;
- A driving licence (B) and your own transport, so you can travel independently to the workplace when needed.
→ Enthusiastic but no experience yet? No problem! At ABflexkracht, you can work and learn simultaneously. With our guidance and any necessary training, you will quickly develop into a skilled and confident metalworker in the Netherlands.
