Ewa on her work and her future in the Netherlands

Ewa, from Opole, a province in Poland, works as a nursery employee at an orchid grower through ABflexkracht. After finishing her studies, all she wanted was to earn her own money. At the time, job opportunities in Poland were scarce. There simply weren’t any positions available. For Ewa, joining her older sister, who already lived and worked in the Netherlands, was a natural step.

“I got my first job at an orchid nursery through my sister,” Ewa recalls. “That’s how I ended up in the green sector. It wasn’t a conscious career choice. There was paid work available, and I took it. Eleven years later,” she laughs, “I’ve gained a lot of experience and learned so much about growing orchids and working in a nursery.”

Bringing a little joy to someone’s home

Ewa truly enjoys her work. In the orchid greenhouses, it’s always pleasantly warm. It is a great example of work in the Netherlands for women: generally clean and light, and she spends her days surrounded by colorful flowers.

“We also grow fragrant orchids here, so it smells wonderful. When I’m out and about and see orchids in someone’s window, I always get excited. I recognize the varieties we grow at the nursery. The smaller phalaenopsis orchids that aren’t staked. I often think, maybe I’ve held that exact plant in my hands, and now those beautiful blooms are making someone’s home a little happier.”

A close-knit team

The orchid nursery where Ewa currently works through ABflexkracht is a small one. Both Polish and Dutch employees work side by side, and the atmosphere is good.
“Everyone knows each other, and communication is clear. That really helps the team spirit. Of course, little things come up now and then, but we always manage to solve them together.”

Everything runs smoothly

Over the years, Ewa has worked for several employment agencies and even spent a year directly employed by a grower. Since 2016, she’s been working with ABflexkracht.
“I really enjoy working with them. I don’t have much contact with the office, simply because everything goes well. But I know that if something comes up, I can always reach out to my coordinator, Monika. It’s a comforting thought that I can speak Polish if I need to.”

Security and a steady future in the Netherlands

One of Ewa’s biggest wishes is to continue working for ABflexkracht when her current contract ends, without interruption. “My husband and I just bought a house, and our child will start school in the Netherlands next year. I long for stability. A permanent contract, either with the nursery or ABflexkracht, would give me peace of mind. That’s what I really want: the security of a steady job so I can truly build my future here in the Netherlands.”
