What does an agricultural worker do in the Netherlands?
As an agricultural worker through ABflexkracht, you usually work in one specific role at one company. Most workers focus on one main type of work for a longer period, rather than switching between many different tasks.
Your exact work depends on the employer, the vacancy and the season, but common agricultural jobs may include:
- Greenhouse production work;
- Sorting, packing or processing flowers, plants, bulbs or other products;
- Nursery or flower bulb-related work;
- Seasonal outdoor work;
- General support work in horticultural or agricultural production.
Some jobs are physical and active. Others require accuracy, repetition and attention to detail. You may work indoors, for example in a greenhouse or production hall, or outdoors in the field.

How your work changes with the seasons
Agricultural work in the Netherlands often depends on the employer, the location and the season. Some greenhouse and nursery jobs are available throughout the year. Other jobs are more seasonal and depend on weather conditions, harvest periods or production peaks.
- Spring: A busy period for flower bulbs, planting, pot plants and greenhouse work. Outdoor work may increase when the weather improves.
- Summer: Greenhouse, nursery and field work continue. There may be more sorting, packing, harvesting or maintenance work.
- Autumn: Some companies prepare for winter or process seasonal products. Flower bulb and nursery work may still be available.
- Winter: Greenhouse work can continue steadily, while outdoor work may depend more on weather and employer planning.
Your typical workday
Your working day depends on the company and the type of agricultural work you do. Some jobs start early in the morning, especially during busy periods. Other jobs follow regular daytime hours.
You may spend your day sorting products, helping with plants or flowers, packing orders, supporting greenhouse production or carrying out practical work in a team. In many jobs, you work together with international colleagues.

Salary and benefits for agricultural workers in the Netherlands
Agricultural workers through ABflexkracht earn a competitive salary in line with the ABU Collective Labor Agreement and, where applicable, the collective labour agreement of the company or sector you work in. This means:
Hourly wage: Starting from €14.99 gross per hour (21+), depending on your role, experience, the company you work for and the applicable collective labour agreement. Rates may be higher depending on the specific position.
On top of your hourly wage, you may receive:
- Overtime and shift allowances, where applicable, for early starts, evening work, weekend work or peak-season hours;
- 8% holiday allowance, paid on top of your regular wages;
- Paid holiday days in accordance with Dutch law and the applicable collective labour agreement;
- Travel compensation of €0.21 – €0.23 per kilometre for your daily commute, depending on the agreements that apply to your assignment;
- Pension contributions through StiPP, as part of the ABU collective agreement.
- Free training and certifications, including VCA safety training, forklift licences and machine operation courses;
- Work clothing and protective gear provided at no cost.

Career growth: from agricultural worker to experienced specialist
Agricultural work can be a good starting point if you want to build experience in the Netherlands. You may start with practical support tasks and gradually learn more about greenhouse production, nursery work, flower bulbs, packing processes or machine operation. Common growth paths include:
All-round agricultural worker: You learn different practical tasks, such as sorting, packing, planting, harvesting, preparing orders or supporting production. This makes you more flexible and valuable to employers.
Greenhouse or nursery specialist: You gain experience with plants, flowers, crops or bulbs and learn how to work accurately and efficiently in a production environment.
Machine or forklift operator: With the right motivation and training, you may be able to learn how to operate machines or drive a forklift.
Permanent employee: If you perform well and the employer is happy with your work, there may be an opportunity to move into a longer-term or permanent position.
What we look for in agricultural workers in the Netherlands
You do not need a degree or years of experience to apply for every vacancy. For many agricultural jobs, motivation, reliability and a practical attitude are just as important. This kind of work may suit you if:
- You are comfortable with practical or physical work;
- You are reliable and show up on time;
- You can follow instructions well;
- You enjoy working in a team;
- You are willing to work indoors or outdoors, depending on the vacancy;
- You can follow work instructions in basic English of Polish. Dutch is a bonus, but not required for many positions.
What gives you an extra advantage
While not always required, the following can strengthen your profile:
- Previous experience in agriculture, horticulture, production or similar work;
- A driving licence;
- Basic English;
- A forklift certificate;
- A VCA certificate;
- Experience with machine operation or greenhouse work.
